The fallacy of Fair and Normal.
Remember when we were growing up and we were told the reason for rules was so that things were “Fair”? Fair is defined as marked by impartiality and honesty; free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism. I don’t know if you have looked at the world today but the concept of “fair” is defined by a person’s point of view. What one person considers favoritism, another considers to be balancing the scales.
How about normal? Normal depends on where you are standing as well. Normal is actually about being able to blend into the surroundings so you can feel safe. Normal is just another way to say average. A butterfly stands out when it is alone on a single flower; when many sit together, you can’t see the individual. How many of us will still be entranced by a butterfly? As we get older, we learn that blending in doesn’t actually protect you, and that life isn’t really fair.
What happens when you do everything right and things end up being horribly unfair and normal is really awful? Life is what happens when you are busy making plans. Sometimes you get the most amazing opportunities while friends and family seem to be getting the hard end of the shaft. Is it the cosmic rake making it all even? No, it is just the way life goes and we need to just pick up and keep going. That is what we need to do when we are getting the shaft ourselves, it is called perseverance. With perseverance we develop endurance and sometimes that is what gets us over the finish line, or at least to the end of a crappy day.
I have learned that you can’t hide from crap no matter how hard you work to blend in and sometimes it doesn’t matter how hard you work to make the world a better place; good people and you can still suffer as well. It doesn’t mean I am going to quit trying to be the world I want to see. It does mean that I am going to stop wasting my time trying to blend in. My friends will tell you that it never appears I really tried. It also means I will keep trying for the good things in life to happen to me everyone else. Am I trying for ‘Fair’? No, I am just working for better.
