What would you do if you had the time?
My friends are always telling me that I am really busy. I’ll admit, having a weekend with nothing scheduled is odd. When you realize that everything on your schedule is what you choose to do, it doesn’t feel like I am doing too much.
Someone years ago told me that I had choices, all I had to do was be willing to pay the consequences for my choices. Is it hard to buck the norm? yes. If it wasn’t for my husband, I wouldn’t be able to do what I want. It isn’t like I am emptying the joint checking account (that wouldn’t be fair). He lets me be an artist, well; kind of. I wouldn’t be as happy working a 9-5, I have tried it. As I have aged, I understand that I was the reason I couldn’t do it. Now, if I had to; I could. There are certain things about working for someone else that make life easier. Taxes is one of the big ones. Covering business expenses is another and having someone else bear the burden of these responsibilities is nice.
Having time is based on what you do and who you answer to. Most people work to earn the right to choose their free time and how it is spent. They work until they can retire and choose their occupations. I choose to be an artist and while it is freeing and I get to do what I want with my time, I also don’t have as many choices as people who have worked all their lives. If we are lucky, we love what we do to make a living. Others figure out how to make what they love pay. Growing up, I was around all sorts of artisans who worked very hard to make play pay. Was their life more fulfilled? I don’t really know, I was too young to know to ask when I was around them.
While I look at my empty weekend and think of those who are working so hard the next few days, I am going to uncover my sewing machine and make something. I haven’t sewn anything for over 2 years, and I am going to start simply today. The pattern is only 5 pieces and I hope to have it done today. If you could choose to do anything with your next bit of free time, what would you do? Have you considered your choices? I have but then I always weigh my schedule and decide what I want to do. It is my free time after all. What are you going to do? Have you decided? Have fun, what ever you do. Life is supposed to be fulfilling and that fulfillment comes from your decisions. Time to make good choices.
